Active Beginnings Yoga and Fitness Program

This summer we’ve had to get creative to come up with a way to introduce and encourage physical fitness among our members since we are not able to offer our usual in-person programs during COVID-19.

Through our Active Beginnings Yoga and Fitness classes, children and youth who are blind or partially sighted will have opportunities to learn and practice physical activity in a safe and supported way. We are offering three different online fitness classes: Foundations of Yoga (4-week class), Intermediate Yoga and Family Fitness.

Are you hesitant about joining a fitness program online? Are you curious about who will be leading our Fitness classes? On episode 2 of our Blind Beginnings Podcast, Shawn and Randi talk to our Yoga and Fitness instructor Whitley Point and discuss the importance of physical activity, the challenges of online workouts, and much more! Check out episode 2 at this link: https://www.blindbeginnings.ca/limitless/

The objectives of this program are:

  • improving physical strength, endurance and balance
  • reducing stress, anxiety, fatigue, and depression – there is research to support that yoga and fitness actually reduces the secretion of cortisol (stress hormone linked to these)
  • increasing confidence
  • increased likelihood of future participation in a community based program maintaining and an active lifestyle
  • strengthening social connections with peers
  • demonstrating to parents that yoga, pilates, and fitness are accessible activities for youth who are blind

Foundations of Yoga 4-week Program  Wednesdays 3:45pm – 4:45pm

In this foundations program, our yoga alliance certified yoga and fitness instructor Whitley Point, will be slowing things down and focusing on familiarizing us with the fundamentals of yoga. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the class, and recordings of the class can be made available for further practice on your own between classes.

The goal of this program is to provide attendees with the knowledge and confidence to not only attend our virtual intermediate level classes, but also feel confident in the ability to attend a yoga class in the community.

Family Fitness Program (individuals are welcome too) – Saturdays at 11am

Join us on Saturdays at 11:00am and move your body. Mom and daughter, Father and son, brother and sister, or any other family combination, this is a chance to do a workout as a family. Throughout the summer our Saturday workouts will be a Pilates class. We chose Pilates because you can do the entire workout without moving off your yoga mat, and we recognize space might be an issue for some families.
