It’s starting to feel like spring in the Lower Mainland! And that means our migratory birds are returning from their overwintering grounds down south. Come join us to learn about our local bird species at our March Community Discovery outing to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary.
What: This outing will be composed of two parts, an interactive workshop featuring real preserved bird skins and skeletons, and a walk through of Reifel Bird sanctuary to learn to ID common bird calls. Both parts of this outing will be led by expert ornithologist and naturalist, Catherine Jardine.
The interactive workshop will consist of bird skins, wing mounts and skeletons for us to touch and explore. Catherine will also lead us on a guided journey of flight and shape, so we can learn how birds have been specialized to exploit flight and other ecological niches to their advantage.
On our walk through Reifel Bird Sanctuary, we will learn how to identify birds based on their calls, learn more about their life cycles, and the habitat they live in. This part of the outing is weather dependent, as birds don’t call in heavy rain and wind. We will however continue the walk in light rain.
When: Saturday March 28
Where: Reifel Bird Sanctuary 5191 Robertson Rd, Delta, BC V4K 3N2
We will meet 9:30am at the entrance to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Shawn will be there to meet you.
*Parking available on site.
Who: Children and youth who are blind or partially sighted and their families. All ages welcome.
Note: Please bring good walking shoes, and rain gear in case it is lightly raining. For those wishing to use binoculars, they are available for rent through Reifel bird sanctuary, and you are welcome to bring your own. Dogs are not welcome at Reifel Bird Sanctuary as they disturb the birds, which can be particularly dangerous this time of year when they are nesting.

*Please let us know how many people will be attending and the names and ages of your children.
