Blind Beginnings is pleased to announce our 2020 Youth Leadership Training Weekend!
What: This is our 10th year running this program and it is offered to youth who are blind or partially-sighted between 13 and 19 years of age from across BC. The program is for youth to develop transferable employment skills including public speaking, communication, mentoring, active listening and empathy, organization and time management, team building and leadership.
Where: The Youth Leadership Network is a 3-day training workshop held in New Westminster. The training workshop will begin on Friday April 17 at 9:30am and will conclude on Sunday April 19 at 3:00pm. Transportation will be arranged for participants who live outside of the lower mainland. The workshop will take place at the Community Living Society building – 7th floor – 713 Columbia Street, New Westminster, BC. Meals will be provided at nearby restaurants, and all participants will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express Metrotown located at 4405 Central Blvd, Burnaby, BC V5H 4M3. Adult chaperones will be present both during the days and nights.
Why: The objective of this program is to provide youth with transferable skills and volunteer experience that will assist them in their future employment pursuits. Once trained, Youth Leaders will be ready to volunteer in several capacities including:
- Being a mentor and resource to younger children who are blind or parents raising a blind child
- Providing awareness presentations in their communities
- Assisting in the planning of group projects, fundraisers, and special events
Note: Each participant must be a member of Blind Beginnings in order to register and attend this program. The annual cost for membership is $10 for an individual or $25 for the blind or partially sighted child plus immediate family (parents and siblings). New members are always welcome.
